April Brandt – Southwest Technical College
April Brandt’s service to her community began in elementary school, when she created a fund to purchase a canine bulletproof vest for the Darlington K-9 unit. Brandt is currently a first-year student in graphic and web design. Brandt participates in the Southwest Technical College Student Senate and was elected as the school’s State Ambassador. In that role, Brandt will meet with lawmakers as a representative of Southwest Tech and all sixteen technical colleges. Upon graduation, Brandt plans to pursue a career in public relations and marketing, working for businesses, political leaders or charitable causes.
Mandy Mayek – UW – Stevens Point
Mandy Mayek is pursuing a degree in political science and public administration at the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point. A nontraditional student, Mayek decided to pursue higher education following the birth of her son. Mayek has worked for the Portage County and Human Services Department for a number of years and currently supervises 16 staff on the Economic Support Unit. Mayek, who is now a mother of two, says she is “passionate about serving vulnerable populations, most notably those in poverty,” and she plans to continue her career in policy and public service.
Sabrina Sanchez – Cardinal Stritch University
Sabrina Sanchez, a native of Greenbush, Wisconsin, is a junior pursuing a degree in health and society at Beloit College. Sanchez describes herself as “impassioned by injustice,” and she strives to address unjust health disparities. Sanchez has traveled across the U.S. and Costa Rica studying health issues and she plans to volunteer this summer at a hospital in Guatemala. Sanchez plans to pursue a master of public health and launch a policy career fighting health injustice. Sanchez, who is financing her own education, has made dean’s list every semester. Sabrina is studying abroad this semester, so here to accept her scholarship tonight, are Sabrina’s grandparents – Mr. and Mrs. Meredith.
